Lana Swanson Counselling Services

About Me

Hi, I’m Lana.

I’m a relational somatic therapist, breathwork facilitator, and Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC). I work with people who are ready to come home to their bodies.

My approach is trauma-informed and relational — meaning I believe healing doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens in connection. We’ll navigate thru stored emotions, trauma, grief, and disconnection that live in the body by tending to your unique nervous system, finding a pace that’s right for you.

What I believe

So much of what we’re taught to see as personal failure isn’t personal at all — it’s systemic. Our culture tends to place the blame on the individual: if you’re struggling, it must be something wrong with you. But most of the time, the real problem is the systems we live inside — systems that were never built with all of us in mind. When we can zoom out and see that clearly, something shifts. It gets easier to meet ourselves with compassion instead of judgment. And it’s from that place of compassion and self-acceptance — recognizing our own innate goodness — that real, sustainable change becomes possible.

Somatic therapy is often talked about like it’s a new discovery — but it isn’t. Body-based, earth-based healing has been practiced by Indigenous peoples for generations, long before western psychology started naming and claiming these practices as its own. I try to hold this with humility and honesty. Decolonizing the way we understand and practice therapy isn’t a side interest for me — it shapes how I show up in the room, and I’m committed to continuing to learn.

Who I work with

In my counselling practice, I specialize in:

  • Relational somatic therapy
  • Nervous system regulation and healing
  • Consensually non-monogamous relationships
  • Highly Sensitive People
  • Folks with traumatic brain injuries
  • Grief
  • People living outside of normative culture — queer folks, chosen family, unconventional lives

(I also offer breathwork facilitation as a separate service — more on that below.)

A bit about my life

I live off-grid in a queer land co-op, in close relationship with the land around me. Nature isn’t a backdrop for me — it’s part of how I stay regulated, grounded, and connected. I’m in a consensual non-monogamy relationship, I have a deep connection to grief, and I am a sexual trauma survivor. These aren’t separate from my work — they inform the compassion and understanding I bring to every session. In addition to my counselling practice, I am a hiking guide and breathwork facilitator at the #1 health retreat in Canada & the US as voted by Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best awards.

My training

Alongside my RTC designation, I trained as a relational somatic therapist through the Opening to Grace program with Mariah Moser, and I currently assist with her Nelson, BC training — a role that continues to deepen my own practice of relational somatic therapy. I’ve also trained in bioenergetic healing and hold Usui Reiki Level 1. I’m a member of the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists (ACCT), which means most extended health benefit plans cover counselling sessions under my RTC designation.

I’m a trained conscious circular breathwork facilitator, offered separately from my counselling practice. Breathwork sessions are not covered under extended health benefits.

If this resonates

If you’re looking for a therapist who understands life outside the mainstream — who welcomes your relationship structure, your gender, your body, and your story exactly as they are — I’d love to work with you.

I would like to acknowledge that I live, work and play on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of Sinixt Peoples. I make this acknowledgment to show my respect for the təmxʷulaʔxʷ (pronounced tem-who-lau-h, meaning homeland), and Sinixt Nation. I feel privileged and grateful to be here, and I invite those reading this to explore their own relationship to place.
